Qantas Professional Engineers Update

July 22, 2014 in Engineers, Latest News 0

Members can take encouragement from the amendments to the Qantas Sale Act that passed both houses of Parliament last week.

Tuesday, 22 July 2014

Maintaining majority Australian ownership

Our campaigning means that the Act has changed to lift some investment restrictions for the company while ensuring continued majority Australian ownership.

This is a significant victory and reward for your actions in developing, supporting and campaigning for the proposal. Thanks to everyone involved.

Maintaining engineering in Australia

While this is a good first step we need to continue the push to ensure standards are maintained and vital engineering work is done in Australia. The threat of off-shoring work has not yet abated.

Through Professionals Australia we need to continue to speak up about the important work Professional Engineers do in the public interest and to the benefit of the company.

Next steps

Over the course of the next few months we will also begin developing our plans for a new Agreement, while dealing with the threat to impose a wage freeze. While the employer has not appeared to progress this aspect of their plan, they have also not repudiated it. We will need to stand together.

We will stand together

We are also aware that structural change in the company continues and that a number of PE positions are to be abolished. If you are affected by this, directly or indirectly, or if you have any questions or concerns please email Paul Davies.  pdavies@professionalsaustralia.org.au.
