As the WHO declares the Coronavirus a pandemic, Professional Scientists Australia President Katie Havelberg has highlighted the important role of scientists in providing evidence and expert advice as part of effectively managing the Coronavirus outbreak.
“The vital role of Australian scientists has never been clearer as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads,” says Havelberg.
“The need to respect the skills and expertise of scientists in managing the Coronavirus outbreak becomes increasingly evident as the infection spreads globally. Not only do we want evidence and expert advice on responding to the threat and effectively implementing the phases of the Emergency Response Plan but we need the facts and clear communication of technical information to counteract the fear, panic and growing mountain of misinformation on social media,” she said.
“We must also understand the importance of properly-conducted research and testing as we search for a safe and effective vaccine.”
“The need to rely on the skills and expertise of scientists to inform our responses to global challenges and the need to put scientific evidence at the centre of policy-making are key priorities of The Future Starts with Science campaign. The fundamental urgency of this imperative has never been clearer.”
