Building on a longstanding commitment to supporting women in STEM, peak science body Science & Technology Australia has formally signed on to the APEC Women in STEM Principles. Professionals Australia is a member organisation of STA and the details of the principles and actions are available here. In August 2019, the 21 member economies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation endorsed the APEC Women in STEM Principles and Actions through the APEC Policy Partnership for Science Technology and Innovation. The Principles and Actions were the result of consultations with multi-sector STEM stakeholders in the APEC region: governments, academic institutions and private companies from across APEC economies. The Principles are: Principle 1: Women in STEM are critical to sustainable economic growth and robust science and technology, Principle 2: Increased representation of women in STEM matters and Principle 3: Overcoming social, cultural, and economic barriers Women in STEM Face is important.
Further to the COVID-19 pandemic, the APEC region’s economic growth is now expected to decline by 3.7 percent in 2020, bringing the total output loss to a staggering A$3.9 trillion. Member economies have been quick to roll out significant and targeted fiscal measures ranging from 1 percent to 20 percent of gross domestic product to address the impact of COVID-19. Despite this unprecedented stimulus in response to economic losses, the crisis persists but fiscal stimulus measures to encourage the participation of women in the STEM workforce will be a vital part of rebuilding the economy.
