Last week Professionals Australia met with members of the First Principles Team (former Defence Minister the Hon. Robert Hill and Major-General Paul Symon) to expand on the submission made by Professionals Australia to the White Paper/First Principles Review.
In particular Professionals Australia addressed the widening science and engineering skills gap caused by lack of succession planning, irrational constraints on APS recruitment, an undervaluing of technical expertise and contracting out of critical in-house skills. The narrow approach to enterprise bargaining is also missing an opportunity to use the Defence agreement as an enabler rather than a straightjacket.
The consequences of not addressing these issues are already playing out and impact on the safety, cost and effectiveness of capability across all Defence domains.
