Building a better future for translators and interpreters – together

June 20, 2014 in Latest News, Translators-and-Interpreters 0

Last year, ASLIA and AUSIT and Professionals Australia (formerly Professionals Australia) signed a joint statement of common goals, which set out principles for working together to fix problems facing our industry.

Friday, 20 June 2014

Together, we committed to increasing the profile of the profession and the industry. We agreed to work towards building a sustainable industry where practitioners are engaged and remunerated at a professional level.

We now invite all practitioners from ASLIA, AUSIT and Professionals Australia to come together to discuss how we can achieve change together.

Why is partnership so important?

To find out more about how a partnership would work you can read our Partnership Presentation or our Partnership booklet. This presentation and booklet will be discussed at events around Australia, if you can’t attend you can read these documents and email us any questions at info@professionalsaustralia.org.au

This is the largest ever attempt to bring our translators and interpreters together to create positive change for the profession – we hope you can be part of these important industry discussions:

  • Adelaide – Thursday 26 June
  • Brisbane – Tuesday 24 June
  • Melbourne – Thursday 10 July
  • Perth – Monday 7 July
  • Sydney – Thursday 17 July

What can we achieve?

Since signing our joint statement we’ve had some wins, but now we need to discuss what steps we need to take next, to achieve our common goals.

Do you want to:

  • Raise wages?
  • Raise quality standards?
  • Improve Continuing Professional Development?
  • Be represented to governments and industry groups on issues?
  • Expand networks across the industry?

If you are interested in any of these things, we look forward to seeing you at one of our discussion events.

ACCC gives Professionals Australia approval to bargain collectively

Professionals Australia has welcomed the ACCC’s ruling to allow it to collectively bargain for translator and interpreter members who operate as independent contractors.

To provide information and advice about rates of pay and other contract terms, we will soon be conducting an industry wide survey of practitioners. We invite all practitioners to take part.

It is important to note that Professionals Australia is only allowed to negotiate wages and conditions for members, so if you haven’t already joined, it is a good idea to do so now. Find out more and join.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at the partnership discussion events around Australia.

Please tell anyone you think might be interested in joining in the discussion – everyone is welcome.

Yours sincerely,

Translators and Interpreters’ Committee
