Professional Scientists Australia has announced the awarding of the inaugural Science Upskill scholarship to two deserving recipients to coincide with Science Week.
The first scholarship has been awarded to Sarah Carroll (pictured above left), a Queensland-based member trained in Earth Sciences. Sarah is planning to undertake the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course. On how she would benefit from the training, she said:
“Science, research, technology and innovation are fundamental building blocks for developing new industries and Australian jobs in a sustainable and ecologically responsible manner.
“The promotion of these building blocks at the highest levels in business is critical to ensuring science influences the corporate agenda.
“Unfortunately scientists are severely underrepresented on boards within the ASX Top 200. By completing the Company Directors Course I aim to ensure science and technology are at the forefront of corporate strategy and improvements in our global competiveness.”
The second scholarship was awarded to Dr. Tsai Tse Yin (pictured above right), a Victorian-based vet. Tsai is planning to undertake an abdominal ultrasonography course with the money she receives from the scholarship. On how she expects to benefit from the training, Tsai said:
“Undertaking this course will give me added skills for diagnosing conditions in my veterinary patients using the ultrasound machine. This will make me a better clinician in my medical, surgical and emergency cases.”
Professional Scientists Australia President Robyn Porter said the decision to award two scholarships in its inaugural year was intended to reflect the importance of CPD at the level of practising scientist as well as emphasising the need to give scientists the skills to convey the importance of science to decision-makers at the management and policy levels.
“We congratulate both scholarship recipients and commend them on their commitment to improving their skills.”
