Chances that the Australian Synchrotron will be expanded have been dealt another blow with confirmation from the Federal Government that they won’t be providing capital funding for more beamlines.
APESMA today revealed that Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research Senator Chris Evans recently wrote to them responding to APESMA's call to fund more beamlines.
Senior organiser for APESMA Llewellyn Rees said the decision followed an equally disappointing response from the Baillieu state government who has also refused to expand the facility.
“Governments of both political colours are failing our scientific community and our ability to find new scientific discoveries,” Mr Rees said.
“Minister Evans has implied that the recently announced National Research Investment Plan may provide funding in the future, but the last thing scientists need is yet another funding review.
“We need action so Victoria can make the important scientific breakthroughs our scientists are desperately keen to make.”
