Sean is central to the success of the campaigns that come through National Office. His role involves working with organisers at various branches and our members to win for our members. His role is varied and includes:
- Growing union membership and density within existing and greenfield workplaces
- Building workplace, industry and community leadership within the association’s membership base
- Organising collective campaign action and activities amongst diverse industries
- Working within an existing organising team to develop and implement growth and campaign strategies
- Co-ordinating and supporting organising staff with bargaining and campaigning objectives
- Working with members and delegates to resolve collective workplace issues
Tell us about yourself
I love the outdoors and I love camping. It’s a little colder down here in Victoria but it’s always nice to unwind and breathe in the fresh (and much colder) air in the great outdoors.
I would have been a chef if the union movement didn’t come calling. I make a mean carbonara.
Away from the stove, I like my Sci Fi books – I went through Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson in only a few days. I highly recommend.
I do like my footy, and I support the mighty North Queensland Cowboys – that footy, not AFL.
Yes, I am a Queenslander. Over the last 15 years, I’ve travelled between North Queensland and Melbourne, eventually calling Melbourne a couple of years ago.
What do you do in your role?
I help members to run campaigns that reach out to colleagues across their industry and community for support. Most of the time, you’ll find me at my desk at the National Office in Victoria on the phones speaking to members, delegates and prospective members.
Every now and again, I’ll go out to workplaces. I’ll be at rallies like the Change The Rules protest in Melbourne.
The many friends I made at the Queensland branch call me the “Face of Professionals Australia.” I’ve featured in many promotional videos which once went through a heavy circulation across all our Facebook pages.

What drives you?
I believe workers deserve to be paid for the value they create and we need an economy that is sustainable and doesn’t threaten the viability of our environment and our society. This drives me to organise professionals – the people who have the skills and knowledge to create a fair and sustainable society, if they use their collective power to do so.
One of my favourite lines in Red Mars comes from the character Arkady. It reads:
“Our work will be more than making wages—it will be our art, our whole life. We will give it to each other, we will not buy it…”
What is your greatest achievement?
It’s difficult to pick a single achievement. I am very proud of all I’ve helped our members achieve. It would be hard to pick one so I’ll pick two. At the Queensland branch, I supported our members at Monash IVF to win significant pay rises through taking protected industrial action.
Here at the National Office, I helped members win paid parental leave for the first time for over 1000 pharmacists and pharmacy techs.
Despite this, there is still plenty to be done. Right now, we are fighting to Change The Rules to make sure all workers get a fair go!
