Technical experts at Alcatel-Lucent Australia will walk off the job for 24 hours on Christmas Day, an action which could see delays in the connection of thousands telephone calls to overseas families and friends on Christmas Day.
The industrial action will impact on Telstra’s International Gateway in Paddington, New South Wales which manages many international calls into, through and out of Australia.
Works that had been scheduled to manage increased demand over the Christmas period will not go ahead as ongoing industrial action impacts on Alcatel Lucent’s ability to fulfil its contracts. Alcatel Lucent technical experts continue to call on the company’s senior executives to return to negotiations and to finalise a workplace agreement that secures a pay rise – the first since 2010.
“Professionals Australia members have been waiting six years for a pay rise, and are still waiting for assurances that their conditions of employment will be secure once the merger with Nokia is completed next year.” said Alison Rose, Professionals Australia’s lead negotiator.
“Professionals Australia members cannot rule out that international calls won’t be disrupted. The company is not listening to employees’ concerns, they are not even attending negotiation meetings. Members are disappointed to have to continue escalating industrial action when we can resolve this matter by negotiation. We are calling on Alcatel Lucent and Nokia management to end the uncertainty that is hanging over their heads this Christmas.” said Ms Rose.
