SA Co-ordinator of the Australian Shipbuilding Federation of Unions Peter Bauer has welcomed the news that South Australia will likely remain the home of Australian submarine maintenance. Although the Federal Government is yet to make an official announcement, the decision to move 700 submarine jobs away from South Australia is looking more unlikely than ever.
Key cross bench Senator Rex Patrick has doubled down on his support for the full-cycle docking to remain in his home state. Within the Coalition, the push to move the work to Western Australia is losing support.
Quotes attributable to Peter Bauer, ASFU South Australian Co-ordinator: The location of full cycle docking in Australia has been politicised for too long with the Government continually dragging their feet on this issue. The lack of a decision has left workers and the industry in a state limbo. Workers in both South Australia and Western Australia are tired of the Government’s ambivalence.
It is in everyone’s best interest that we now move forward with certainty. The Government needs to end the rumours and confirm their plans to keep the submarine maintenance work here in South Australia. South Australia is best equipped to continue Australia’s submarine maintenance. We have the knowledge, skill set and infrastructure. It’s a no brainer that the subs should stay here.
