The Collieries Staff and Officials Association (CSOA), represents Staff and Deputies at BHP’s Illawarra Coal.
Director Catherine Bolger, has released this response to Illawarra Coal’s announcement to make 85 workers redundant.
“The Collieries Staff and Officials Association is very concerned and disappointed by today’s announcement of downsizing by Illawarra Coal.
“We are particularly concerned that Illawarra Coal hasn’t undertaken a proper consultation with staff, or taken steps to mitigate the effect of today’s news on staff.
“We are disappointed that Illawarra Coal has undertaken an organisational review over the last two months, but has not consulted genuinely with staff in that time.
“We urge Illawarra Coal to explore the option of offering voluntary redundancies before any forced redundancies.
“We call on Illawarra Coal to do the right thing by staff and work with them to reach better options for both staff and the business.”
