Negotiations between the current government and members working in Australian Government agencies have been ongoing since 2014.
Instability in government, as well as a poorly received and highly constraining bargaining framework, has meant that until recently little progress had been made in lifting members’ wages to keep pace with the rising cost of living.
However, thanks to work of members who have been extremely active advocates throughout the course of negotiations, we have seen movement in the government’s position.
The Australian Government Group (AGG) of Professionals Australia met last week to decide on what the next steps should be.
At this meeting the AGG endorsed the ‘Turnbull position’: a 2.5% increase to wages, with additional compensation for delays since 2014, which works out as a 7.5% increase over a two-year period. This mirrors the agreement struck between NBNCo employees and the government under Malcolm Turnbull’s tenure as Minister for Communications.
Congratulations to all members on your work so far – we’ve made real progress and we can make even more if we keep working together.
